How To Buy A Mattress Questions and Answers

Open Question: How should I support a loft bed?

So I'm in college and I'd like to make my bed into a loft. Instead of renting a loft for $150 for a semester and having to move it myself in a small car, I'd like to just put my bed ends on top of my room mate's bed ends but have no support in the same way they would if we had both mattress racks in. I just wanted to know if I should buy 2x4s and A) Bolt it to the frame in the holes where the bolts go to hold the mattress rack, or B) Just zip tie/tie with a rope the crap out of a 2x4 to brace all 4 legs?Well the beds were meant to stack. The posts have holes in the top and bottom for a small rod that I've already put in. They make sure nothing topples or anything like that. The 2x4 would just more more like a splint for the legs. And they'd be on both sides, for the record. more

Resolved Question: Why is my 97 Ford Explorer squeaking so badly and what can I do to fix it?

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD w/ V6 SOHC Engine Everytime I turn the wheel OR anytime I hit the slightest bump in the road, the truck squeaks. It's not squealing like a belt is loose or something, but SQUEAKING....it sounds like someone is jumping up and down on an old mattress. It's annoying and so embarassing. Also, when I turn the wheel, it turns kinda rough and creaks. Could someone give me an idea of what the problem(s) could be and about how much it would cost to repair this? I'm thinking of buying the parts myself and just paying someone to do the labor, but I would need to know exactly what parts I would need to buy. Please help if you can! more

Voting Question: Im having a yard sale but I'm still confused about the prices?

I'm selling a bunch of things that I don't need. Kitchen ware, toys, clothes, etc. My big question is about the crib. I bought the crib for $110 and the mattress for $60. The bedding for $60 and its pink with winnie the pooh. Im not sure how much to ask for the crib and mattress together. Its pretty much new since my daughter hated sleeping there. And how much should i sell the bedding for? I've never put a yard sale before so Im a little lost. Thanks for your help! more

Resolved Question: How do I keep my wet sheets and towels from balling up into my fitted sheets in the dryer?

I just recently bought queen sized sheets for my new mattress. Before, I was always able, with the full-sized sheets, to wash the sheets and towels together with no problem. With the new sheets, however, when I launder sheets and towels, one or 2 of the towels ball up into the fitted sheet. I wash 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, a bath mat, plus a fitted sheet, a regular sheet, and 2 pillow cases together (and sometimes the pajamas go in with them) Never a problem before, but lately I end up having to redo the dryer time b/c one of the towels got balled up into the fitted sheet, and thus the sensor couldn't tell that it wasn;t dry, so the dryer cycle stopped naturally. This happens every time. TOnite, I just did the sheets and pajamas, and it still happened with the bedsheet getting balled up into the fitted sheet. I put them into the dryer separately. How do I stop this? more

Voting Question: What do I need to consider in order to buy a Mattress?

I have never gone Mattress shopping before. I went to sleepy's today and I got a deal for a Queen Memory mattress for $961.92 with delivery included; according to the invoice I'm saving $440.00 (I know it's probably not the best deal but I can always exchange it). Anyways, I haven't purchased it yet, I want to see my options but I did give a deposit of $85 to hold it until I make up my mind. the question is, what do I look for when it comes to buying a mattress? How do I know if I'm getting a good deal? I'm married and me and my wife are both under 25 and we come home late and leave home early so we don't really get the normal 6-8 hour sleep you are supposed to get. Thanks more

Voting Question: how far along would i be if i am pregnant?

i got off the pill two months ago. my first period i was 5 days late and then only had my period for two days instead of four days like when on the pill. we made love twice in one day on a day i think i was ovulating right after i stopped the pill. here it is the second month and today i am 6 days late so i got a pregnancy test. it showed i was positive. was just curious how far along i could be if i am pregnant. how can i tell if i got pregnant right after stopping the pill the day i was ovulating (during the first month off the pill) or after the second time i was ovulating which i didn't keep track of. the first ovulation would make me about two months or so pregnant and the second ovulation around three weeks pregnant. the reason i thought i could be pregnant is because i had bought some jeans that were really loose on me and sagging and now they fit kind of snug, i get warmer at night time and also during the day but thought the night time might be because of a new temperapedic mattress we got, i get nauseated when i get hungry, my nipples hurt really bad when my husband tries to suck on them or play with them, i tend to have to pee more, and my loose bra now feels tight as well. how can you tell how far along you are? how accurate are pregnancy tests? do they ever say your pregnant when you're not?it also seems like i am alot thirstier. more

Resolved Question: How can I keep my bed warm at night?

Hi, I just moved into a basement suite where there was no bed, so I simply bought a mattress and put it directly on the floor to serve as my bed for the time being. However, since the mattress is right on the floor (which is just a thin carpet over concrete), it is FRICKING COLD at night, and this is during the summer. Anyone have any suggestions to keep my bed warmer that aren't too expensive? P.S. "Buying a bed or a box spring" is too expensive, so please don't suggest that. more

Resolved Question: I'm going shopping tomorrow for a firm mattress...?

When I bought one fresh out of college I had no idea that you really can't buy a good mattress for $350. Within 3 months it was caved in in the middle (I weighed 110 lbs.) so obviously I did not do a good job in picking one out. =) I definitely want a FIRM mattress this time. Any recommendations of types? Company? About how much am I looking to pay for a good queen size? more

Resolved Question: How can I fix a squeaky box spring?

I just bought a bed off of my buddy, and the box spring is squeaky as hell. It really ruins the integrity of the bed due to the noise. Can I fix this? I have heard putting a sheet of plywood between the box spring and the mattress.....does that work? I want to make sure whatever I do works because I am on a college budget. Any recommendations or suggests on fixing this squeaky box spring? more

Resolved Question: How can I make a simple, VERY SHORT 'coffee table' for the center of my room in front of my my bed?

I want to fill the empty space in the center of my room next to my bed. My bed doesn't lift up. It's just a bed frame on the floor and a mattress on top of it. Thats it. There is no under-bed. And I want a table in my room. that is short to put things on it when I'm laying in bed. Instead of putting it on the floor. Because when I put stuff on the floor or a drink on the floor, I end up knocking it over while I'm sleeping. Or someone knocks it over by accident. I'm tired of putting things on the floor. So I want a short table. And I can't find any on websites and stuff. I don't want to buy one. I want to learn how to make one. I know nothing of construction. I'm 15. And I think a table is simple to build. An inch thick piece of wood for the top piece, and 4 wood legs nailed down from the top of the table pieces, down into the leg. Right? So someone teach me what I need to build a table and how. more

Voting Question: I'm buying a used mattress. Will spraying it with Lysol get rid of the germs/virus including common STDs?

Yeah so Im a college student in Ohio with no money (haha what's new) and Im tryna save money any way I can. Buying a new mattress would set me back at least 200$. I found a 2 yo mattress on craigslist previously owned by a woman who recently graduated. I mean I dont know what has gone on that bed or what is in it. I was thinking of spraying it down w/ Lysol and dusting it off to get rid of any germs, bacterias, viral organisms, etc but I dont know if it will get rid of serious things like STDs virus that may have strayed on the bed. Im not asking about a cure for STDs but how to eliminate them off the mattress. THANKS :] more

Resolved Question: How do I treat bed bugs with diatomaceous earth?

So I think I have bed bugs. So I bought food grade diatomaceous earth in a 50 lb bag. Now what do I do with it? Where should I put it? Everywhere there's carpet? On the mattress? In my bed frame? How long do I need to leave it there (not thrilled about the idea of walking around on powder)?Yes because I can totally afford fumigation as a student. That was not helpful and not what I asked. If you have another suggestion that is actually affordable please tell me, as this is what my dozen google searchs turned up. more

Resolved Question: My dad threw up in my bed again?

So anyway my dad passed out drunk in my bed again. Ordinarily this isn't a big deal but this time he totally threw up all over my room. I've already scrubbed the carpet and washed all my clothes but my mattress is soaked straight through to the other side with red wine vomit. Can I clean it myself or will I have to take it somewhere and get it cleaned professionally? I'm only 15 and don't have access to a vehicle so hopefully I can find a good way to clean it at home. My dad's completely useless so it's pointless asking him for help. My mom died almost 7 months ago due to liver and kidney failure. Also, how can I prevent this from happening in the future? I don't have a lock on my door and he drinks everyday so he'll definitely pass out in my bed again. Should I buy a plastic bed liner or something? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Should I get a twin or full bed?

I am in college and moving into my new apartment soon and trying to figure out what size bed I should get. I have had a twin my whole life and been fine with it and have had an xl twin for the past 2 years in the dorms and furnished apartment and been fine with it as well. A lot of people are saying how they can't wait to get a full or queen bed and it's making me think that maybe I will be more comfortable on the full bed. I have plenty of room for the full bed too and it really would be nice to have one. But then I have a comforter already that fits a twin and would probably look awkward on the full bed. I found a mattress that has a full bed that is only $10 more than the twin, but then I will also have to pay more for the frame and the sheets too. Also, I might have to buy a whole new comforter if my twin one will look too awkward. So basically, I want a full bed but it seems to be so much more expensive and I am trying to save some money and use it towards things that would be more beneficial. Since I have never had anything but a twin, I don't know if it is worth it. So what you think? Especially those in college, but really everyone's opinion would be appreciated. Thank you!! :) more

Resolved Question: How to clean a used mattress?

I bought a high end queen size pillow top mattress from a graduating medical student who was moving. This mattress has a body odor smell. I need to do something with this. How do I prepare this mattress for use? I'm thinking about renting a cleaning machine and cleaning it, then let it dry, use upholstery spray on it and then putting some sort of mattress cover on it. Can anybody give me more suggestions? The mattress is in great shape. It just smells like somebody else's body. For those that think this is creepy... please keep in mind that when you are staying at random hotels overnight, you are essentially sleeping on this same kind of mattress. more

Resolved Question: I want to know if I can afford it?

Ok, I want to know if I can afford to rent this townhouse. My current living situation is an apartment where rent is based on the income and it's 63 dollars a month. I also pay for basic cable which is 26 dollars a month. I pay electric which is about 40-50 every month. Everything else is included. The townhouse I want to get the rent is also based on income, but I have to pay more bills. I'm not sure how much the rent will be but I know it will be lower because the maximum amount is lower. Anyway, I would have to pay for internet which is $50 a month, trash which is $16 a month, TV which would still be $26 and electric which I assume will be the same also. I would have to buy a couch (I found one for $100)and a mattress and box spring set. My current income is $600 a month but I will be getting a bonus in September at work which will make it around $900. I really want to do this if I can because it's a two bedroom so my son can have his own room and it has a playground and a yard. I am responsible for all my sons expenses and gas in my car to get to classes which is about $100 Can I afford it???Oh and I would also have to pay the rent here out of my September payday and the cable and electric billOH and on the townhouse a water bill that's $30I also don't have to worry about food more

Voting Question: My 12 yo lab prefers to sleep on the concrete floor, bought several beds, how do I get him to stop?

His previous owners had a concrete kennel where he slept during the day and some nights. Generally they took him inside at night. I have bought a memory foam mattress, large down substitute bed, the other large beds sold at costco. He will get on the bed, stay there until I leave and then sleep on the concrete. We have a large backyard, and he will still sleep on the concrete patio. This can't be good for him, he is an old dog with arthritis and hip problems. How do I get him to stop sleeping on the concrete? more

Resolved Question: Starting to panic about all the baby stuff I need to get?! Time is running out!?

I am 24 weeks pregnant, so I still have some time left, however I'm not going to be having a baby shower because I have no friends or family where I live (because my bf and I moved across the country before I got pregnant and no one can make it out here for just a baby shower). So this is my first baby and I'm getting really nervous and feeling really overwhelmed! all I have is a crib and mattress... thats it! I know I still have 16 weeks, but money is tight right now as we are depending on only 1 income. I've applied for service Canada (which is like Unemployment and Maternity Social assistance) but I'm still waiting to hear if I even qualify. I am totally planning on buying everything second hand because there is no way I could afford brand new anything! realistically I probably need about $500 or MORE worth of baby stuff, and I just don't know where to begin. What do I do? I'm SURE I'm not the only one who has felt the pressure of needing baby stuff as you get closer to the due date. Any tips and suggestions how to manage this in the least stressful manner? more

Resolved Question: 17 years old, took bed frame out of room, mother is angry?

My parents bought me a whole bed set about 2 years ago, I didn't like it when they bought it because everything was really big and my room is kind of small so it made my room look even smaller & it looks REALLY conservative. So last year when I was finally allowed to paint my room I convinced them to allow me to take out the night stand. Today I decided to take out the bed frame and my mom is raising hell! She wouldn't help me move my mattress or box spring, I had to do it all on my own. Then she wouldn't tell me where my dad's tools were so I could unscrew everything, she told me to wait until he got home so I pushed it in the hallway so I could clean & vacuum. Now she's complaining saying how it looks stupid and she's moving everything out of my room and putting my bed frame back in and cursing about my room. Am I at fault at this or is my mom just overall too controlling? How do I get through to her?@Kazz, excuse me. Pay for stuff? Sure bills, food, all that stuff. I pay for my own things because I have a job thank you. more

Resolved Question: How can someone prevent bed bugs?

I have a friend that lives in a senior building and her management told him they have an infestation of bed bugs. He doesn't have them, but he is really worried. Resolved Question: What is a good way to keep flooding from the floor off of the stuff that is on the floor?

I am homeless, temporarily staying with some people, and they would like me to move into their basement. However, their basement floods EVERY time it rains. They want me to completely move in to the basement, so that all of my stuff, including a couch we will get from the garbage, one of their computers, and everything that I have that will go on the floor having no furniture, into the basement. According to the guy, the flooding just barely covers the floor - so that it would be wet, but have no depth - i.e. not be high enough to go over the top of my flip-flops. The space cleared for me will have to be large enough to be an actual room, which would fit a couch, a computer, and a bunch of stuff, and maybe even some kind of mattress. What are some good and cheap suggestions on how this ENTIRE area could be covered so that nothing that is there will get wet in the slightest, and also that the material will not be "bunched up"? I will need to be able to spread out my papers and legal documents on the floor as well... that means that the covering needs to be able to remain steady/flat. (This man will not buy any food that costs more then 10 cents per ounce. This means that 95% of what is sold at Wal-Mart is inappropriate to buy. Therefore, something that costs $60 is a long way from "cheap".) more

Resolved Question: Persistent flea problem?

My flatmates have two cats and we've been dealing with fleas for the whole summer, especially in my room even though the cats are not allowed in there. I've tried everything possible, I vacuum every day, I've washed my linens fanatically, pillows and even thrown away my duvet. I've sprayed the carpet once (sometimes more often) a week as well as the mattress. I last spray the mattress, less than 24 hours ago and I just found another flea. I usually find one a day and always in my bed, never anywhere else and it doesn't matter how often I wash, clean or spray, they always come back. I read somewhere that fleas couldn't go inside your mattress, but it seems to me that is the only logical place, they could stay (and I have moved the bed and vacuumed under it as well as between the mattress and the box spring) I am completely helpless in this situation and need advice that doesn't evolve buying new mattressHi everyone thank your for your answers. I have no idea how this yahoo stuff works, but i wanted to say that the cats are being treated consistently, so I don't think that's the problem. And yes I do think i need to open up my door to the cats so that the fleas will jump on them and not me. And they are being treated with Frontline. more

Resolved Question: a selfish husband - Over-reacting or normal?

I've wanted new living furniture for years now...I sacrificed b/c my husband said we don't have the finances to buy what I want. We recently moved to cut cost and save (I'm a stay at home mom), Currently we are sleeping on an air mattress and 18yr furniture that's a mood swing away from being pitched! Well last week he jumped up and bought a MOTORCYCLE??!?!?! I was crushed..... I thought this purchase was beyond selfish, and yet he doesn't see anything wrong. I haven't mentioned to him how I feel about this b/c of all his excitement, but my feelings were truly hurt. Would I be wrong if I jumped up and bought a bed room set to sleep on or new living room furniture so that we don't have to sleep on the floor?!?!? that we have been "needing" for some years now?also, when I did mention the idea of getting furniture over the bike, he called me selfish??!! My thought is "we are sleeping on the ground" WT?!!?! I hate to be selfish but I am going out and buying all new furniture :-) more

Resolved Question: bed bugs, how to get rid of? who to call?

Ok, so ive tried 91% alcohol. And i mean gallons of it for about a month now. it really does kill them but only on spot. im so sick of this. i bought a mattress set about 4 months ago, and noticed i started getting bit the same night after i bought them. we just bought the house we moved in about 4.5 months ago and i wasnt getting bit. until that night we bought the mattress set. ive never had this problem before in my life. im so sick of it. its a very small house only 7 rooms total. i really want to get a professional to come help me with this problem but would like to get some input, most people say they are too expensive. most say they dont work and to do it yourself. well ive tried the bedbug powder the cedar oil and 91% alcohol. trust me ive used it so much! please all input will help. im in need of advice! ASAP. oh yeah i also have vaseline lining the door ways the bed frame everything!yes i a really good green machine vaccum. lol everyday i leave it outside with a black trash bag over it. its been over 100 for about 3 days this week and more the weeks before. ive read that 113 degrees will kill these darn bugs. once again im up at 2 in the morning. wiping and spraying rubbing alcohol all over my house. im starting to think the only thing left to do is leave my house for oh id say a few years! the orkin man is coming on monday. if that doesnt help then i have no clue. i feel so bad for people that have to deal with this. somebody just told me that a very harsh termite killer will do the trick, but they said if you get it on your skin it can cause cancer. im willing but i dont know how willing. more

Resolved Question: For those of you with convertable cribs...how do you feel about the toddler bed? Baby #2 on the way...?

I am getting ready to switch my daughter from her crib to her toddler bed and I am kind of dreading it. I don't really like the looks of the "toddler bed", it looks more like a daybed. On top of that, I'm shopping for new bedding and I'm afraid it won't lay right because of how it has the three sides. I guess I knew all of this when I purchased it, I was just more crib focused at the time. It seemed like it would be a lifetime until I actually needed the toddler bed. I still absolutely LOVE the crib and when it eventually turns into a full size bed I know I will love that too. It's just this middle transition that I'm having a hard time with lol! My husband and I thought about skipping the toddler bed altogether and just putting her straight in the full size bed. But we have baby #2 on the way and didn't really want to spend the money on a full size mattress right now. We were planning on buying new furniture for the baby. I know I'm probably just over-analyzing this situation but I don't know what to do (I blame the pregnancy lol). I've been looking for inexpensive used bedroom sets to put her in instead, thinking maybe we could save some money by just letting the new baby have the crib and furniture we already have. What did you do when baby #2 came? How did you feel about you toddler bed when it came time to convert? more

Voting Question: How to redo a 13 year old girl's room? I have a small room and I want to make it look great!?

Ok, so my room is like really small. Im talking like 10' by 8'. I have to fit a twin sized bed, bookshelf, desk, dresser, and a little nightstand thingy. What colors should I paint it? I was thinking like one wall light purple and the other 3 light blue. Do those colors sound good? Also, my bed is really high up and im tired of falling out of it every night. My parents can't afford to buy me a bigger bed, so I was thinking of just putting the mattress on the floor. Is that ok? Any suggestions on decorating or anything would be great! Thank You! more

Resolved Question: How old is too old for diapers?

MY stepson brother come and visit now and then he is 8 sometimes he will sleep over. He is not my husband's child. When he sleeps over he pees in the bed. I just bought brand new mattress he socked through the water proof pad. So I saw diaper s for big kids at night, by pull ups. I spoke to his mother about them next time, asking what did she think about next time he sleeps over i will ask him to wear them to bed because i do not want him to ruin my new mattresses, his mother said that is horrible and I should not make him wear them. He does not pee in the bed at her house only at ours because it is unfamiliar. 1. She is my husband’s ex so she sometimes makes things difficult 2. He has been sleeping at our house for 5 years how unfamiliar is the house. 3. Since she is a single mom I try to be nice and have her other child sleep over so she can go on a date and the two brothers can bond. So I am not trying to be nasty. I do not give the children anything to drink after 7:00 pm. However I know he sneaks into the bathroom to drink water. They are a brand for 8-10 year olds so they do not have mickey mouse or anything silly on them Is 8 too old to wear them what else can I do?She told me not to give him anything to drink after 7:00Pm. I saw him get a cup i did not stop him because i figured he was thirsty. Also he pees most of the time not now and then more

Resolved Question: Why do conservatives argue that the government does not create jobs?

They argue that government spending does not create jobs or stimulate the economy. They argue that only private sector jobs stimulate the economy. However, my personal life experience indicates otherwise. As many of you know, I owned a manufacturing company. Many of my contracts were government contracts to make parts for aircraft, trains, and many other products. This is government spending that actually stimulated the local economy. ALL of the other business owners I know make money from government contracts. Whether it is a service contract with the GSA, or a military contract to make spare parts, the private sector benefits tremendously from government spending. Furthermore it isn't limited to federal government spending. The local police and fire department also spend money. When they buy new police cars, they spend money to get the cars retrofitted with lights, decals, and interior renovations. This work often goes towards local private businesses. Local schools issue contracts to local companies for general upkeep, from landscaping and maintenance to supplies and renovations. Government contracts are issued to clean the carpets, paint the walls, and maintain the HVAC. Not only that, but government employees spend the money they earn. They have salaries and they spend, which stimulates the local economy. Government employees do not hoard money in their mattresses. Government employees buy houses, cars, and home supplies, just like you and me. If we stop government spending, like conservatives want, then we lose all these contracts and jobs. If we ship all these things to the private sector, then they become more expensive because the private corporation needs to add money for their profit so the owner can become a billionaire, so privatizing everything will result in higher costs. In short, government contracts already produce billions in stimulus. I don't need a television or radio personality to tell me how government spending helps local businesses. I see it all the time. QUESTION: Despite direct observational evidence, why do Republican conservatives continually state that government spending creates no jobs? Also keep in mind, that government spending MUST by LAW be on American companies, while private sector companies continuously ship our jobs overseas. So government spending = only on American companies. Private corporate spending = jobs in China or India where labor is cheaper. Why would private sector spending help more than government spending? more

Resolved Question: why do you need to buy a complete bed instead of just buying a mattress?

beds are so hard to even fit into a doorway without disassembling them, and very heavy too, how do you even move them, when you shift apartments? Resolved Question: How can I get over my fear of the dark?

Ok so im 17 and im afraid of the dark and I want to get rid of my fear. I was afraid of the dark when I was little because I was always paranoid, i'd always have to have my door open, a night light on and be huddled up in a ball. I got over most of it it by the time I was 13 and was able to break free from the ball, having my door closed came a lot earlier due to my mother always having her god damn tv on, and I got rid of the night light. I moved into a house at the age of 12 and about 1-2 years later I started having waking dreams. I'd wake up suddenly and their would be some horrible creature almost human like coming towards me. I'd always have that feeling of it's going to kill me and i'd scream, some times it would run away or disappear but other times i'd just come towards me until my mother came in the room. It would usually happen about 3-4 times a month till I was 15 then it started coming back about once a month. Theirs one that had come repeatedly, it was a huge white spider. It was more annoying then scary, i'd often kick at it when it came down from the sealing on it's silk. When ever I kicked at it, it would sway as if I had touched it then it would run back up to the sealing and disappear. The second last time I ever saw it was when it brought a big black and red spider with it, I got scared ran to turn on the light and I could still see the spider for a second. The last time I ever saw it was when I had a paralyzed dream accompanied with a delusional dream. Im afraid of my brothers room and I used to keep it closed because I always had to walk buy it and i'd often try to run past it but i'd often get hurt because a little set of stairs is literally right next to his door. I got over it but recently I find my self being creep ed out by it. I almost never go into my parents room at night unless I have to, it just creeps me out so much. I'd heard voices at night, they have never been nice and often ended up on threats, I also have a lot of little stuffed animals in my room and some times they creep me right out because I think their going to come after me. Im terrified of my closet and literally only go in it on rare occasions. When ever I go to bed i'll run and jump onto my bed as fast as I can and try to go to sleep. I used to sleep on the couch for about a year when I was 15, my parents hated it but I was to afraid to go into my room. When we first moved in I slept on a mattress then they got me a bed frame and I couldn't sleep in my room for a few weeks because I was so paranoid. I often have bad cases of paranoia if I have sugar right before I go to bed. But I know it's not the true cause of it because it happens even when I don't have sugar. I think my paranoia and waking dreams have started up again because I noticed im displaying odd behaviors like I normally do when i'm afraid of the dark. I was fine for a while but now I can't even go into the kitchen with out a light on and I freak out if I do go in with out a light on.I currently sleep in my room with the door closed. I do face the dark a lot but im getting in to my paranoid habits.Again! and I don't want to see a doctor again. more

Resolved Question: What can I do to stop my cats insane toileting habits?

Okay, so I am seeking the wisdom of all you cat owners out there. I'm currently on my 2nd mattress, my parents on their 3rd, because of this. Mittens, our 6 year old female cat, keeps peeing on our beds. Some info about her: She's spayed, she's independent and I hardly ever see her in a day unless I go into my room. My room is her comfort zone, her hideout - as it has been for 6 years. Mittens was born into the house and hasn't left it since (unless of course she goes outside, but I mean she's never lived at another house). She has had many litters in the past, but finally we spayed her a few years back. We have 4 dogs: Rosalina (Goldendoodle - standard poodle/golden retriever), Napoleon (Golden Retriever), Camelia (Pomeranian), and Coco (Pomeranian). They are frequent barkers and they frighten Mittens. Her food and litter box is downstairs, my room is upstairs. Whenever she leaves the sanctuary of my room, the dogs annoy her and harass her. When she goes downstairs and hops onto her platform to eat, Rosalina nips at her because she's quickly moving. When she goes to the bathroom in her litter box, the dogs surround all the corners and stare at her. Mittens is independent and affectionate - and needs her personal space. Her retreat from going downstairs to toilet - peeing and pooping on our mattresses. She either pees on one of my twin beds or on my parents' kind mattress. We are constantly buying new mattresses. Whenever she pees or poos (or both) on a mattress, we clean it and flip it over. When she pees on it again, we buy a new bed. Its ridiculous. My parents are fed up, and if she does it again, she goes. I think I have a few solutions, but they aren't grand: 1. Move the litter box upstairs 2. Take her to the vet to see if its a veterinary issue Please help. I would never be able to move on without Mittens. She's been with me since I was 6 and I called her my baby since I was 7 years old. How can I stop her insane toileting habits? (Willing to post additional information immediately after asking)Okay, another thing is I would never kick her out of my room, as I mentioned earlier, it is her place and has been for a long time! Plus upstairs is one big hallway with bedrooms and no shelter up there, so she'd have no where to hide if I closed her out of my room. more

Resolved Question: How can she make it up too me? What act would equal what I had to go thru?

Resolved Question: How can I tell my Grandparents how I feel....?

I feel like I'm being shoved aside by foster children. In so many ways...Okay. The first was when I was about six. They were brother/sister, and they did everything to make my life a living hell. Once, I accidentally ran into the girl (I was jumping off the dock at our camp), said sorry. She blew up at me, and shoved me into the rocks in the water. They pulled my hair, shredded my books, everything. They stayed for five years. They stole, from my family and from stores, lied, cheated and hurt everyone. The boy left after getting caught trying to bash in our television, and the girl left after threatening to kill herself if my Grandma didn't let her go on a date. Shortly after, they got a little girl. I feel like she's there to replace me. She has stole gum and money from me, and plenty of varied things from my family. I graduated grade eight this year, she from SK. They put her's, mine, and my brother's school and grad pictures up. Hers is in the middle, my brother's in by the side, and mine is behind the china cabinet. No, I'm not kidding. Behind the china cabinet! Do I really not matter that much? I don't hate her, she's very sweet (but kind of annoying at the same time). We got an 11 year old who lies about her age, too. She's disrespectful to my family and our house. She spies on us, went through my diary, our stuff, and goes on my laptop without permission. She hacked onto my Facebook. Tomorrow, we are getting two more. Our household count will go up to nine. Sunday my Aunt and Uncle are visiting. It will go up to 11. The two new girls are 11 and 13, and I know them. They are spoilt and bratty, and I can't stand them! The youngest that is already here sleeps in my room, my bed, and is being moved to a mattress in the master bedroom. We have my Great-Uncle and my Great-Grandmother here; my Uncle is in the basement, my Great-Grandmother where my new room is. The oldest currently here is in my room (upstairs with youngest), in my supposed to be new bed. The oldest three girls are sleeping in my room, with a cot. I don't count. The 13,and two 11 year olds do. I'm the oldest. I don't even have a bed, not even a couch! It really hurts me, knowing that I play second fiddle to everyone. It hurts so much, I cry myself to sleep at night. And yet, I don't want to hurt my grandparents. I'm getting kicked out of this house on Sunday to go with my aunt and uncle at my other uncle and aunt's house, who are at vacation (they told us we could). In the meantime, I get to sleep on the floor. Aside from the portrait thing, my grandparents are very conservative, and bikinis are a no-no. They don't like my one piece halter swim suit, and yet, they bought them two skimpy string bikinis. I hate playing second fiddle. I tried to look up POVs from former foster children, and they made my blood boil. One said, "You shouldn't expect us to be grateful. We got ripped out of our homes, dumped into a random house, and they expect us to be grateful? HA!" It's people like my Grandparents who sacrifice their time and home and everything for them, and this is what we get. I know it's not my choice, but it just kills me everyday. It just..augh! I hate being second fiddle. Am I being entirely selfish? I'm trying to be nicer, to understand, but I'm so stubborn I'm having a hard time. What do you think (I'm not overreacting. All of this is true.)? What do I say? more

Resolved Question: Am I being paranoid?

This is long so have patience. Okay so I have a bone to pick with my parents; actually I have several bones to pick with them. I don't think they are fair between me and my brother. Day before yesterday my brother said something that kinda stuck by me. He said (on the subject on teaching my mom how to operate her new phone) "she sits at home all day, why don't you ask her to do it." I didn't say anything at the time but it hit me like a ton of bricks. I don't just sit at home all day. I go to University full time and college full time, I have a full course load which means I have 7-8 hours of classes everyday (in the fall and winter semesters) and I'm planning on working part time this fall which means another 3-4 hours a day gone. apart from that there's homework and stuff. And I thought how can he say I just sit at home and do nothing. Then I got to think of all the bad things about him, I mean how can this college drop-out, yes he is just a high-school graduate say to me that I do nothing when I'm preparing to apply for law school. When my brother told my parents he quit college, I had done the same, I would have never gotten away with it, and yet somehow he did, he crashed his car and got away with it. I'm 22 and I don't even have a car. He's 25 and drives his own (which is paid for by my father) Audi A4; and he thinks it's his own car because he doesn't let anyone else drive it. I have to share the car with my dad and mom. Once my dad was taking his car out and I asked if I could take the Audi out he said "go ask your brother, it's his car." it pissed me off so much. When I confronted my mum about it, she said I was crazy and said that the Audi too was a family car and anyone could drive it. This was two years ago, and I still haven't driven the Audi; no one has. This February my parents bought my brother a $4,700 Omega watch, and a few months later I asked my dad that I needed a new bed because I sleep on the mattress which is on the floor, he said he didn't have any money. I didn't know what to say to that. I just nodded and went back into my room. It seems like every time I want or need something they can't give it to me but every time my brother asks for it they instantly provide him with whatever it is that he wants. All three of them sit together to make plans for family outings and then they've finalized the plans they tell me that we're going on this date and I have to be okay with it and move my plans around. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong, I always help clean up the table, whenever there's a dinner in the house I always help whereas my brother is out with his friends, I clean the dishes, help clean the house, I'm a straight A student, I've never failed a test, let alone failed a course. But everything I do just doesn't seem to please my parents. I don't know what to do, I've tried talking to them but it doesn't work. I've exhausted all my options and now I just try to stay out of of the way and sit quietly in my room and study. There are several such instances that I can list that have happened since my childhood, my favorite however, is that when I was born, my father isn't even in town, he was out, on business, and he didn't even hurry back, just took his sweet ole' time. I just want to know if there is a way to deal with this because it has started to take a toll on my health, education and my social life. I just don't know what to do. If anyone is wondering after reading this then yes I was beat up as a child, not just hit or slapped but beat up....mercilessly. more

Resolved Question: Memory Foam Mattress or Topper?

I need your help please! I live in a shared house with my landlady. Now, my current double bed and mattress belongs to my landlady. The spring mattress is absolute rubbish and has been giving me back-ache, however as I don't own a bed I'm hesitant to buy a mattress (plus, they're so expensive). I mean, what if I move out, and end up with a bed that's bigger (or smaller) than my landlady's bed? So as an alternative, I was thinking of buying a topper. I've never used a topper before, so wasn't sure if it would work...... I've heard a lot of good things about memory foam, so was thinking of buying a 3inch memory foam mattress topper to go on top of the current crap mattress as a) it's cheaper, and b)won't be as problematic when I eventually get my own place and buy my own bed. Do you think it would work and help the bed be more comfy? Or do you reckon I'd be better off investing in a mattress, even though I don't own a bed? Please help! Also, please be aware I'm quite a chunky lady (i'm not MASSIVE but I'm not thin either), so I guess my weight would contribute to how long the topper would last! more

Resolved Question: Moving to different state-cheaper to ship or drive stuff?

I'm going back for my sophomore year at college, which is out-of-state about 700 miles away. Last year I was in the dorms, but this year I have an apartment and need to move stuff up there. My mother and I are arguing what would be the cheaper/best way to get it up there. She wants to ship it(my mattress, box spring, bed frame, nightstand, a few boxes and maybe a dresser), but I want to drive and rent a small u-haul. My main issue is I don't have a car up there(I typically fly back and forth), so when I get there how would I go around to thrift stores and such to buy items like couches, dining table, etc and bring it back without a car? Also I have to drag my luggage from the airport on the bus to the apartment (I did this last year when I lived in the dorms-not fun), then find a way to get shipped stuff up the stairs by myself. My mother hates driving long distances(its about a 12 hr drive), so she want to ship it, but I can't imagine shipping all that is cheaper than renting a small u-haul. Plus, the getting more furniture with no car thing. Has anyone had this dilemma when moving, and what do you think would be a better idea? more

Resolved Question: How can I make my 'memory foam' mattress (too firm) more comfortable?

Early in the year, my parents brought me one of those generic tempurpedic mattresses that claim to be exactly the same. Well, it isn't. It was fairly comfortable at first, but now it's like a rock and I often wake up sore. How can I make it more comfortable? I was thinking I could buy some kind of featherbed topper, or even two and stack them. Is that worth the money? I don't want to shed much more then $150. Any advice is very much appreciated! more
